Each day is associated with two HEXAGRAMS of the Yi Jing (or, Zhou Yi), one each from two different cycles:

LUNAR HEXAGRAM: a cycle of 60 of the 64 HEXAGRAMS keyed to the LUNAR MONTHS:
Five HEXAGRAMS are associated with each LUNAR MONTH, appearing in the same sequence each year.
Each LUNAR HEXAGRAM continues for a 6-day "week", with each Changing Line ruling for one day.
The extra four HEXAGRAMS (51, 30, 57, 29) are associated with the four solar year seasons beginning with LUNAR MONTHS 1, 4, 7, and 10, respectively.

Dots indicate the general auspiciousness of the HEXAGRAM, and of the Changing Line for the day. (Specific auspices may be interpreted from the reader's study of the HEXAGRAM and Changing Line texts in the Yi Jing, or Zhou Yi.)

DAILY HEXAGRAM: a 72-day cycle of eight 9-day "weeks" each "week" comprised of the eight HEXAGRAMS that have the same Trigram at the bottom. During most of each YANG year, the cycle begins with HEXAGRAM 1 (QIAN, "Arising") progresses through the 72-day sequence to complete with HEXAGRAM 2 (KUN, "Supporting") and then repeats. In YIN years, the cycle reverses.

"Consult the Oracle" The middle (5th) day of each "week" has no HEXAGRAM. On such blank days, readers may wish to cast one for themselves.

Dot indicates the general auspiciousness of the HEXAGRAM. (Specific auspices may be interpreted from the reader's study of the HEXAGRAM text and commentaries in the Yi Jing, or Zhou Yi.)

Note: English titles and Chinese spellings here may vary from other editions; the numbers of the HEXAGRAMS will be the same as commonly accepted versions.
