BIRTHDAY OF TIAN HOU ("Empress of Heaven"), also known as TIAN-SHANG SHENG MU ("Most-Holy Mother of Heaven"), an historical person, LIN MA-ZI, who in a state of trance saw her brothers and father in danger on the sea, and led them to safety. After her death, she helped many others in similar distress, and in 1683, was deified. She is commonly called MA-ZI ("Grandmother").
